Title
Pietermaritzburg, 1916. A section of the "Town Hill Deviation", opened in 1916 between Pietermaritzburg and Cedara (first named Rietspruit). It provided an easier graded route on 1 in 50 as opposed to the punishing 1 in 30 gradient of the 1884 alignment between Pietermaritzburg and Howick (later Merrivale). This alignment was in turn replaced in 1960 with the opening of the 6023-metre Cedara twin tunnels. A new Cedara Station was built at the north tunnel portals, and the old Cedara was renamed Aradec.
