1879. CGR 4th Class No 297 'Hat Rack' built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in1897 later SAR Class 04 No 0297.
1911. CGR heavy passenger engine No 850, later SAR Class 4 No 1477. These engines were designed by Mr HM Beatty and ordered over Union. Note the engine has a CGR number plate but shows 'SAR' on the tender.

CGR 4th Class with Joy's valve motion built by Neilson Co in 1883. The Joy's VG on these engines was not a success. From the early 1890s they were converted to Stephensons VG and the side tanks were removed and were known as 'Converted Joy's'. Later became SAR Class 04 and had a long useful life.
