In preparation for a high speed commuter service between Johannesburg and Pretoria, SAR Class 6E1 No 1525, under the direction of Dr Herbert Scheffel, was specially modified and achieved a speed of 245 km/h between Westonaria and Midway on 31 October 1978, achieving a world record for 1067mm gauge rail travel.
