From this photograph, one can assume that it was taken at night to demonstrate the brightness of the Pyle National Arc Headlamp fitted to a CSAR 8th class. Although it gave an excellent light they did not enjoy a long life, replaced shortly after with the tungsten filament bulb that became standard on the SAR.

1904. CSAR Class M No 995-996 rack locomotives. They were built by Vulcan Foundry No 1942-1943 of 1906. They were not a success and the rack drives were removed and then used for shunting. In 1910 they were renumbered 0995-0996 but were scrapped in 1912.
