Cape Town, circa 1906. Departure of CGR 4-4-2 4th class Atlantic locomotive (later SAR Class 04) with main line passenger train.
CGR 4th Class with Joy's valve motion built by Neilson Co in 1883. The Joy's VG on these engines was not a success. From the early 1890s they were converted to Stephensons VG and the side tanks were removed and were known as 'Converted Joy's'. Later became SAR Class 04 and had a long useful life.
1879. CGR 4th Class No 297 'Hat Rack' built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in1897 later SAR Class 04 No 0297.
