Westonaria, 1978. In preparation for a high speed commuter service between Johannesburg and Pretoria, SAR Class 6E1 No 1525, under the direction of Dr Herbert Scheffel, was specially modified and achieved a speed of 245 km/h between Westonaria and Midway on 31 October 1978, achieving a world record for 1067mm gauge rail travel. With speed fairing.

Pretoria. 3kV DC electrification, Rosslyn – De Wildt number 2 line, tests to measure contact wire uplift. Six SAR Class 6E1's travelled in both directions with trailing pantographs at 50, 70 and 90 km/h on a test section between mast pole 33/9 and 33/10 with a temporary mast halfway between them All three mast poles were instrumented to measure contact wite uplift, technician setting up measuring equipment at mast pole 33/10. A linear potentiometer visible above the right hand of the technician measured contact wire uplift.
