Jansenville district, 3 December 1974. Wren engine ‘Little Bess’, built by Kerr Stuart in 1919, being loaded for refurbishment in the SAR workshops at Uitenhage. The camera man is from the African Mirror and the person standing behind the engine is Philip Blackett who cooperated with it’s rescue. There after it was used in Uitenhage by the local Rotarians. In preparation for a high speed commuter service between Johannesburg and Pretoria, SAR Class 6E1 No 1525, under the direction of Dr Herbert Scheffel, was specially modified and achieved a speed of 245 km/h between Westonaria and Midway on 31 October 1978, achieving a world record for 1067mm gauge rail travel.
