August 1984. 3kV DC double unit motor generator traction substation at Thornybush was built by Escom for the extension of the electrification from Pietermaritzburg to Cato Ridge and taken into service on 29 February 1932. It was taken out of service in December 1965 when the new electrified double line deviation between Umlaas Road and Pentrich was opened to traffic. Escom retained ownership of the substation building, still used as workshop. [T Robberts]
